deerhoof221.jpgDeerhoof at the Black Cat.  Harlem Shakes opened the night.  They had superbly written songs–well constructed pop tunes with a 60’s feel a la Bruce Springsteen.  The only problem was the lead singer, who was horrible.  He looked bored and he sang like Frankie Valli if he was high on glue.  Annoying voice.  But the songs were great.  The sound mixing was poor.

Deerhoof rocked the stage.  Of special interest was the electric rainbow machine, which was basically a turbine which spun a giant propellar, the blades of which lit up to the music.  Incredible.  Great, great show, although they did play all their hits about 2/3 of the way through, making the end of the show anticlimactic.  Only problem with the show?  The crowd.  Same problem as their show here last year.  Everyone doing the standing still.  When did acting bored become cool?  Just shoot yourself and be dead–that would be the ultimate in cool, right?  You’re at a rock concert and the band is really rocking (Deerhoof has some great power rock riffs and they really create a lot of energy on stage) so why are you standing still?!  It irritates me to no end.

Thoughts, students?

Well, my undergrad music solution was to attend en classe. It was kind of like physics… bodies in motion set other bodies in motion.

unfortunately i was a one-man dance machine. but despite my best attempts to rock (head thrashing, arms waving, hips shaking) the crowd was unmoved.
